It was delightful to see Bill and Steve sharing a stage and reminiscing about their stuff, but I was surprised that Bill (gadgets) and Steve (widgets) didn’t settle the debate about the original inventor of the widget.

One can never have too many widgets. Somebody codes something you never even dreamed of wanting - suddenly everybody

Bryn,

Bill is left-handed. So am I. The tendency of some left-handers is to shake hands with our left *or* right hand (lefties favor the left side, after all) so it's possible he shoved his left hand in his pocket to make sure he shook hands "correctly", that is, to make sure that he extended his right hand. Maybe he wanted to make sure he got the "right" hand out for the cameras - literally.

If that wasn't the reason behind why he did it, then maybe it was body language, like you say. It seems if you shove one hand in your pocket before extending the other one, which is a very deliberate, very unusual move, then maybe your guard is up (that is, you're just feeling defensive).

[...] I had heard earlier in the day that Steve Jobs and Bill Gates were going to be interviewed together by Walt Mossberg of the Wall Street Journal at the paper’s D5 conference. I’ve now been able to watch the 8:05 outtakes reel that the WSJ put together after it happened. There are some interesting ideals being spun around. My fave being that Gates starts talking about the Zune and Jobs pops in and says we like the Zune, too since the entire Zune development staff are customers of the iPod. I’ll have a complete report on my opinions of the interview after I’ve watched it all. You can find all of it here. [...]
